How to start a Blog?

As we all came to know about “What is Blogging?”, its popularity and career in blogging. In this article I am going to tell you “How to start a Blog?”, cost of the Blog and steps involved in starting a Blog.

The single best business and lifestyle decision is starting a blog.

My decision to start a blog came very quickly. Within 15 minutes of seeing my first blog I wanted to have one. I often talk about 2 things I found attractive in the first blogs I saw:-

  1. They gave normal people a ‘voice’ to share their story, experience and ideas.
  2. They created community, and a place for others to come and interact around the ideas, stories and experience of the blogger.

The other thing I loved about blogging is that I have got a platform to express myself, think out loud and record different aspects of my life and what I was doing and learning. It also looked like fun. I also got the opportunity to interact with people around the globe as they also share their views and opinions about a particular subject.

Why to start a Blog?

1. Get 100s or even 1000s of people to hang on your every word.

Ok, not on every word.

But as you grow your audience, people begin to actually start caring about what you have to say. In a world where many of us feel like we don’t have a voice, this is a powerful thing.

2. It gives you a reason to waste your time on social media.

We have to accept that we waste our half or more than half of our day on social media or surfing internet.

Well, what if you actually had a Productive, and Profitable reason to be on social media? Whether it be Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or Pinterest, all of these can be assets that will allow you to grow your blog.

3. You’ll make friends from all over the world.

With the help of your blog you can make friends all over the world. You can also have healthy discussion on your subject as people will comment and will share their opinions, views and some may disagree or some may agree with your statement. Those who love articles will always expect an article from your side and they’ll also support your article and statements made by you. What else do you expect from a friend?

4. Become a better writer

Writing might be the single most important skill you can learn if you want to be successful with any online lifestyle business. A blog actually gives you a way to practice these skills.

If you’re able to build up your writing skills and get people really interested, engaged and entertained by what you have to say the sky’s the limit.

5. Gives you an easy way to add consistency into your life

Sometimes, it can be tough to know what to work on. But when you have a blog, and you set a posting schedule. It provides much needed structure to get things done on a regular basis.

6. Provides an opportunity to have unbelievable experiences for free

If your audiences will be larger, the more you get opportunities. And if you work hard at it and grow something really special, these chances for free or sponsored experiences will literally be some of the most memorable times of your life.

7. Build web skills

Let’s face it, the internet isn’t going anywhere.

Word and excel won’t cut it in the new era. Starting a blog is a useful and fun way to learn what the hell you are doing on the internet, and provide you with technical skills that will be beneficial regardless of what you’re doing.

How much does a Blog cost?

Online vs. Offline Classes

Learning and teaching patterns have changed tremendously in the last decade. As a world going towards digitalization more and more institutes are coming up with online education ideas. On one hand ideas such as The University of People, free education for all flourishing while, on the other hand, paid courses from industry experts are given via online. So, the question spurs what are these systems and how they differ to each other? And, which one is the best? Let’s solve all your queries one by one.

Online Classes

Online classes are the system of taking classes online without having to travel to any physical institute for it. You can take class sessions at your convenience and flexibility, sitting at home. Online classes are also known as distance learning programs; however, there is a slight difference between the two. Distance learning programs can be based on correspondence through the post (traditional approach) whereas complete online classes can be one in which examinations and all the studies take place online only. Online courses are the great opportunity for individuals with family responsibilities, working professionals or the person who travels a lot, to build their portfolio or gain some skills.

Offline Classes

It is considered as the traditional education system. Students have to go to a physically present institute, school or college for learning. There is a more personal connection between teacher and student but it comes at the expense of traveling time and cost. If you are considering to live in dorms and learn from your peers then offline education is a more preferable mode of education than online. The cost is a bit higher though your surroundings of people will include

Advantages of Online Classes:

Cost effective: The expenses to live in a dorm or travel to study can be avoided in the online course.

Convenient: The classes can be attended at your comfort while sitting at home or wherever and whenever you want. No time and place limitations.

Self-Discipline: It develops self-discipline as you would only be able to complete the course when you are motivated, organized, and disciplined.

Access to More Resources: Learning online is more resourceful as the internet is almost an indispensable part of our lives now. You can find credible information related to each topic in your study material, in fact, online lessons generally provide additional resource links to make students better understand the topic.

Disadvantages of Online Classes:

Requires Internet: It is mandatory to have the internet connection to attend online lectures.

Isolated form of learning: No peer to peer connection or interaction with classmates to learn from them. It is a more isolated form of learning.

Late Response Time: As classes happen to take online immediate support cannot be assured. As online, a question or query sent will only get resolved if someone is available on the other side.

Advantages of Offline Classes:

Interactive: Students can talk to each other in real time and the personal connection between teachers and students can be established as everyone is present in one classroom. It leads to more interactive sessions.

Fast Response: In one on one offline sessions, there is a high probability of getting immediate response and resolve student’s query.

Better Completion Rate: As offline classes are more interactive, the overall course completion rate is much higher than online where a person needs to be self-motivated to complete the course.

Disadvantages of Offline Classes:

Over Dependency: It is not a completely independent form of learning and students generally become overly dependent on the teachers for every detail.

Costly: Travel and other expenses related to accommodation and all make offline education more costly than the modern internet-based learning approach related to accommodation and all makes offline education more costly than the modern internet-based learning approach.

Fewer Resources & Explorations: Offline resources are in a form of books and journals. Its free availability is dependent on the institution services if the institution doesn’t provide such material for free then it becomes restricted to student’s budget. The chances of exploring more and finding things out for themselves are less.

Industry Culture

India is the youngest nation, its unemployment ratio is spurring day-by-day. Any opportunity for setting themselves league apart is taken up with open arms. It is not really surprising to see a gradual upward trend in Indian online education industry. Not only India other developing nations have adopted e-learning too considering the major benefits of it.  Top institutes like Harvard, Yale, and IIM’s are also providing online courses; however, so far the completion ratio of online courses has been a concern for all these institutes. The completion rate is low across the board 0.8% to 7.5%

A research has found out that the major reasons for failures are limited communication, lack of personal responsibility and teacher instruction.

How Industry is adapting Online Classes?

It indeed seems online learning is growing surely but the fact remains the same the problems and drawbacks of MOOC’s have given an opportunity for online private tutors to shine. Organizations such as Handakafunda are coming up with the concept of online private tutoring in a form of live classes with the excellent use of technology and online teaching. It’s a great example of how a private tutor turns out to be an entrepreneur offering CAT tutorials online. It tapped the untouched market and exploited the weaknesses of current online system. It has given access to the same kind of coaching to students in a small town as students in the metro cities.

Final Takeaways

At the end, which type of approach the modern online classes or traditional offline classes is good for you totally depends on your individual preferences and the various factors that differentiate online and offline classes such as cost  and personal attention.

If the individual is looking for a more hybrid approach to save cost and time and getting personal attention at the same time then online private tutors are preferable. Online institutes like Handakafunda is quite a good option for such students.

In order to attain this, search engines crawl different websites to understand what this particular site is about. This is done to ensure that searcher gets relevant and useful results while browsing the web to enhance the user experience. Meta Description: After Title tag comes Meta description, it is more like a synopsis of each page. Meta description gives the search engine a brief summary about each page. It must include keywords and also enough details to tell the visitor what the page or content is all about.

Sub-Headings: Using heading like H1, H2 or H3 can be a great way to give Google further information about your content. It will help search engines to better understand the content of your blog or webpage.

Internal Links: Internal Linking means adding links in the content which can redirect your reader to some internal page of your site. Suppose you have written content about best places to visit this summer then you can also add the link of your blog post about each place’s specialties or tour plan.

Image Name and Alt Tags: Using Alt tags in images helps Google to know more about the image and its content. If you are using images on your website then do use alt tags to optimize your images for SEO purpose.

Off-Page SEO

Off-page elements are additional to your on-page elements on which you have full control. You cannot control these elements directly; however, you can implement some strategies to make it work in your favor.

Here are some of the off-page SEO factors which can impact your SERP rankings:

Quality Backlinks: It is all about trust. It is amongst the most important factors in the website’s search ranking. On the Internet, trust meaning the legitimacy of your website. How can you prove your site’s legitimacy? Through creating quality backlinks.

Social Media: One more important off-page SEO factor is your social media presence. The number of shares, likes, followers, and subscribers can ultimately boost your SEO strategy.

A resume is a list of all your accomplishments, qualification, and prior work experience. It is basically a timeline of your career till now and other aspects which helped you to reach where you are standing right now.

Why Resume is so important?

A resume is a marketing tool for any job seeker. Marketing requires good representation and full functional details of the product and service being sold. In the same way, when a candidate is looking for a job it is necessary to provide complete details to the hirer.

A bad resume can cost you a job of a lifetime. Try to look for professional resume examples before drafting one and follow this article to draft a meticulous resume for yourself.

Top Resume Mistakes

Practice makes man perfect but when it comes to resume, editing and re-editing makes your resume perfect. Recruiters have hundreds of resume for one job, it takes seconds to decide if they want to go through your resume or not. That’s why it becomes imperative to send the perfect resume which highlights all the important aspects of your journey so far.

Here are the top 5 resume mistakes to avoid for making a perfect hit:

1. Including too much Information

Using 0.5 margin and 8.0 font in order to fit as much as you can in one page is an epic failure. Try to have plenty of white space and not more or less than 0.8 margins.

Having dense blocks of text makes it tough to glance. As your resume is has only glanced first. Don’t make this mistake.

2. Grammatical errors and typos

This is the worst blunder one can do. Grammatical error and typos are irritating for recruiters because it hinders their overall resume glancing process as well as it shows lack of seriousness on the part of the candidate. Take time to proofread your resume.

3. Using a one-size-fits-all approach

While applying for the job you often try to create a resume which can be sent to multiple companies at one time; however, this approach is not good. Tweak it a little bit to show your interest in the company you’re applying. Include keywords to match the job description.

4. Not quantifying your accomplishments

Empty self-congratulatory accomplishments can prove nothing, quantify your achievements. Write numbers, “three times best annual performer in a row”, the number of team members managed, sales figure, etc.

5. No Action Verbs

Action verbs are life-giving phrases of any resume. These phrases show off your initiative and punch up the overall language of your resume.

Simplicity v/s Creativity

Giving your resume a uniqueness that can separate it from the crowd is every candidate’s desire. This inner urge leads to the many types of different creative resume. Applicants have used infographics, video and even time trails for replacing standard resume.

Unfortunately, this can be one of the best ways to annoy recruiters as they are habitual of glancing at your resume.

Creative resume can be annoying or job winning depending on the type of position you’re applying for. The post, for example, graphic designer or video maker may require you to do that extra bit of hard work to stand out.

If you’re applying for accountant and manager then traditional resume is more preferred.

Be cautious of making creative resume as many times they can do more harm than good. As it has too much flair and oversaturated with keywords.

Things need to Remove and Add in Resume

We all make mistakes and resume writing is also prone to this problem. Make sure to follow below-mentioned guidelines of what to exclude and include from your resume to avoid major blunders most people make while drafting a resume.

5 Things to Exclude from your Resume

1. An objective

Almost 85% of candidates make this mistake. If you are applying for a job then it is obvious you need that job. Don’t add objective in your resume unless you are an exceptional situation such as changing industries or switching job roles. In such cases, add a relevant brief summary instead of objective.

2. Irrelevant work experiences

Recruiters want to see how well you fit to the job role not how many different experiences you have. Adding only relevant work experience makes your resume to the point and concise.

3. Personal details

According to new provisions do not include any personal information such as social security number, religion or political views, it may lead to discrimination. Now, it is no more needed to include such information though it used to come into guidelines of resume earlier.

Also, do not include references.

4. Your hobbies

If your hobbies are not related to the job you are applying for then it is a waste of space and waste of time for the recruiter. Only hobbies which correlate to the job posting should be mentioned.

5. Blatant lies

It’s okay not to get perfectly fit into the job requirements. Including blatant lies counted as efforts of proving you have 100% qualifications. Candidates should focus on the skills they can offer rather than focusing on skills they can’t offer.

5 Things to Include in your Resume

1. Contact Information

Do include your contact information and make it visible. Include your LinkedIn profile link at the top. Do not mention your street address and give only one phone number and email address.

2. Professional Title

Mention your job title unambiguously. When someone is looking at your resume there should be no doubts related to the position you are applying for.

3. Metrics

Recruiters need numbers to fully evaluate your competency to do a particular job. Include your accomplishments in measurable terms such as achieved sales targets by 120% for consistently last 6 months.

4. Credentials and Certifications

If you have any additional certification or diploma degree which is relevant to your field write it as an acronym to your name. Do not mention undergraduate degrees which are irrelevant to the position applied at the top.

5. Relevant URLs

Resume has a limited space to tell everything you want to. Adding relevant URLs such as URL of your website can help recruiters to know more about you. A cherry on the cake you are not crossing the boundaries of resume writing.

End Note

Resume drafting and re-drafting is the only way to write a near-perfect resume. Be concise and crisp with your content. It’s a short narrative not your biography. Write your resume keeping in mind your audience i.e. your recruiter and job you’re applying for.
